Charlie Kitchen

Charlie Kitchen (1991) was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. He received his BFA from Texas State
University, San Marcos in 2014 and now lives and works in San Antonio as the Building and
Events Coordinator at Artpace, Inc

My practice analyzes of the fundamental qualities of photography through physical
manipulation of analog processes. Intervening in-camera offers a way to dissect each sheet of
film and construct each image before exposure, allowing me to test the qualities of flatness and
space within a photograph as well as integrate aspects of printmaking into the photographic

Unlike other photographic processes, the large format process is significant in that it
presents a space between the lens and the film in which its user can operate. By means of
masking the film and overlaying multiple exposures, the image can be fully controlled outside of
traditional photographic imagery, thus offering alternative forms of photographic perception.

A natural inclination to seek photographic knowledge through a form of experiential learning
provides an impetus behind my practice. Following the thread of one idea to the next, I am
offered a way in which to explore physical space as well as visual space through the large format process.
